Twenty-One Guns

A Memorial Day Salute

To The Service

And Sacrifice

Of Those Who Have Fallen

Twenty-One Guns!

The Captain Rallied His Men

Twenty-One Guns!

Bloody Battle Began

**********

Twenty-One Guns!

The Line Echoed The Call

Twenty-One Guns!

Musket, Powder and Ball

**********

Twenty-One Guns!

Held The Line Against Cavalry Cannons

Twenty-One Guns!

Held the Line with Fixed Bayonets

**********

Twenty-One Guns!

Battle Hard Muskets Primed

Twenty-One Guns!

Stormed the Enemy Lines

**********

Twenty-One Guns!

Blooded Cannon Smoke Heavy

Twenty-One Guns!

Freedom’s Battle Flag Steady

**********

Twenty-One Guns!

Captain’s “Give ‘Em Hell !” Command Calling

Twenty-One Guns!

“Our Brave Captain Has Fallen!”

**********

Twenty-One Guns!

Victor’s Tunic Blood Red

Twenty One Guns

Whispered Captain’s Last Breath

********************

Twenty-One Guns!

My Proud Memorial Day Salute

In Honor of The Service

And Sacrifice

Of Those Who Have Fallen

**********

Until Our Trails Cross Again:

God Bless America!

Amen & Amen

Author’s Endnote: I penned this poem shortly after my best friend Maverick passed into Dog Heaven. He stood loyally by my side through my life & death battle with Cancer. “Give ‘Em Hell Mav!” was Maverick’s rallying call. For twelve wonderful years, that’s exactly what he did.

Rest In Peace Maverick

Always & Forever

My Brave Captain

My Best Friend

Give ‘Em Hell Mav!”

From Dog Heaven

(Author’s Endnote: This poem appeared in the 5/29/23 online edition of The Adirondack Almanack.)
